I want to tell you about a great man I knew,
a man of passion, of love and integrity too,
he could bring a tear to your eye just by whistling a tune,
God took away the music, the whistling too soon
He was a family man, that was easy to see
he lived for his kids and his beloved Elsie
together as one, morning, night and noon,
god took away a husband, a father too soon
a loyalty to his band, the famous Grass Creek
the brothers travelled and played week after week
they spread the bluegrass feeling with a jam and a tune
God took away a brother, a musician too soon
The gentle beat of a bass, tall strong and true
a lot like Doug's character to me and to you
a man loved by all, in that there is no doubt
God you took him too soon, we all want to shout
But alas it is time to say goodbye and let go
there are angels in heaven waiting to hear his music you know
so if you look past the stars and beyond the bright moon
you'll see this great man that I knew, that God took too soon
